November Digital Detox

megdeford

You are cordially invited to join me in a month of dialing back on screens and dialing up on life! This digital detox is about finding more focus, clarity, and time for the things we genuinely enjoy. You may find yourself tired of doom-scrolling and Netflix binging, or maybe you're just curious to see what a little “digital diet” can do for you.

The Plan

🚫 No Social Media or TV on Weekdays – For real. Unless it’s essential (like work). If you’re posting for work, try scheduling content in advance and keep an “in-and-out” mindset when you log in.

✅ Weekends Are Yours – Want to binge? Go for it! The weekends are free to use as you wish.

🤔 News and Podcasts? Optional. – Keep it light if you listen. Maybe tune in to NPR’s 5-minute news segments to stay updated without overwhelm.

📚 Books, Music, and Audiobooks Are A Go! – Dive into all the reading and listening your heart desires.

Think of this as a flexible challenge. If you need to adapt it to fit your life, do it! But don’t be afraid to challenge yourself by starting a bit more restrictive—you can always ease up after the first week if needed.

My First Attempt…

Two years ago when I first tried this, I picked up my phone 47 times on the first day of the challenge. Yep. Forty-seven. “To do what?" you may find yourself asking. The very important work of scrolling - duh. FORTY SEVEN TIMES! That was a revelatory moment for me. This little exercise revealed two big things:

  1. I had no clue how much of a habit this had become.

  2. This was going to be a lot harder than I thought!

The first week was annoying. I missed my phone. I wanted to scroll; I wanted to watch TV. It was almost embarrassing how much I craved these distractions. By the first weekend, I binged an entire Shonda Rhimes series.

But then… something shifted. My mind felt clearer and more focused. I read more. I rediscovered my love for music. I spent time doing things that filled me up. And when I did turn on the TV, I actually enjoyed each episode instead of binging without thought. The whole experience made me more present in my life.

A Few Things I Realized

We are the sum of our habits. The small actions we take daily define us.

⭐Our brains work like algorithms. The more we engage with something, the more our minds tune into it—like buying a white Jeep and then suddenly seeing white Jeeps everywhere!

⭐I felt more connected to my childhood. I remember making mix tapes sitting on the floor by the radio, creating adventures in the backyard, or doing crafts just because. It was active, not passive, and that’s the vibe I wanted back.

⭐The world goes on without us. Yes, it’s good to stay informed. But do I need the details of a random crime states away? No. Do I need to watch videos of cats suggesting we go to the apple orchard? I want to say yes, but deep down, I know the answer is no.

Will You Join Me?

As we go through November, I’ll send weekly emails (YES I SEE THE IRONY) with encouragement, ideas, and maybe a laugh or two. You can read or ignore these messages—I won’t take it personally. But if you’ve read this far, I think we’re in it together!

Let’s see what we can gain by stepping back. And I promise, at the end of the month, I will share how many times I reached for my phone on November 1.

Cheers to November - a little less screen, and a lot more us 💖

xoxo,

Meghan
