Finding Your Lead Goal

TL;DR: Too many goals = not much progress. Identify a lead goal.
You want to launch that business.
You want to run a marathon.
You want to give a TED Talk.
You want to learn French. And go to France. And travel more!
All good goals. But here’s the deal: if you have multiple high-priority goals, you actually have zero. When we spread our energy across lots of life-changing ambitions, overwhelm sets in. We don’t know where to start, so we burn energy and time thinking about starting (and perfecting) instead of actually moving.
The Importance of a Lead Goal
How do I know?
I’m an Aquarius sun, Sag rising. 🙃
If you want to make real progress over the next 90 days (which is April...wtf), you have to stop throwing spaghetti at a wall with your ambitions. You need a lead goal.
How to Choose Your “One”
Look at your list of big goals and choose the one with the greatest leverage. Ask yourself this one question:
If I focused exclusively on just ONE of my goals for the next 90 days, which one would create the biggest positive impact in my life and maybe make the others easier?
That’s your lead goal.
Example of a Lead Goal
For example:
Focusing on financial stability for 90 days—getting debt under control, building a cushion, creating clarity of needs vs. wants—the stress removed may give the mental space to finally tackle the other goals next season.
Why 90 Days?
Why 90 days, you ask? It’s long enough to see real, measurable progress but short enough to stay focused without burning out. Think of it as a season. You can do almost anything for one season.
You’re not choosing forever. You’re choosing right now. Will you be “done” in 90 days? Probably not. But will you be significantly further along than if you tried to do this plus everything else? Absolutely. Progress loves focus.
Taking Action: Your 90-Day Challenge
If you’re open to it…
Take 10 quiet minutes this week to write down all the goals swirling in your head. Then circle just one you’re willing to give your full attention to for the next 90 days. Not forever. Just this season. Writing it down and saying it out loud is often the first step toward making it happen.
The Power of Focus
When you focus on one goal, you channel your energy. This focused approach helps you avoid feeling scattered. It’s like having a flashlight in a dark room. Instead of illuminating everything at once, you shine a light on one area, making it easier to see what’s in front of you.
Overcoming Obstacles
Of course, challenges will arise. Life has a funny way of throwing curveballs. But with your lead goal in mind, you can navigate these obstacles more effectively. You’ll find that you’re more resilient when you know what you’re working toward.
Celebrate Small Wins
Don’t forget to celebrate your progress along the way! Each small win is a step closer to your lead goal. Whether it’s a completed task or a newfound skill, acknowledging these victories keeps you motivated.
Adjusting Your Course
As you progress, be open to adjusting your course. Sometimes, what seemed like the best goal at the start may shift as you learn more about yourself and your priorities. That’s okay! The key is to stay flexible and responsive to your own growth.
The Ripple Effect
Focusing on your lead goal can create a ripple effect. As you make strides in one area, you may find that other goals become easier to tackle. It’s like a domino effect—knocking down one goal can help you clear the path for others.
Conclusion: Your Journey Awaits
So, what are you waiting for? Grab a notebook, take a deep breath, and dive into your goals. Remember, you’re not alone on this journey. We’re all figuring it out as we go. And with your lead goal in sight, you’re already on your way to making meaningful progress.
